History of Mount Kilimanjaro

Mount Kilimanjaro is the highest peak in Africa, located in Tanzania. Its formation started some three million years ago. This is such an outstanding mountain with its three volcanic cones: Kibo, Mawenzi, and Shira.

The first mention of Mount Kilimanjaro was made in ancient times. To early Africans, this was a holy place. In the 19th century, the mountain started to be documented by European explorers. In 1848, German missionary Johannes Rebmann became the first European to report the sighting of Kilimanjaro. For some time, his accounts received skepticism until other expeditions proved his findings to be true.

Mount Kilimanjaro became a great object of interest for explorers and scientists during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. On October 6, 1889, the German geographer Hans Meyer and the Austrian mountaineer Ludwig Purtscheller completed the first known ascent to Kibo, the highest of Kilimanjaro’s peaks. At the time, the climb was out of this world.

The mountain’s name has varied through time. The local name of the mountain is “Kilima Njaro,” which translates to “Mountain of Greatness.” To some, the word “Njaro” means a god or mountain of whiteness, which relates to the snowcap peak.

Mount Kilimanjaro’s glaciers and snow attracted scientific attention. Through most of the past century, these ice fields have drastically shrunk. Climate change still threatens the remaining glaciers, an issue for conservation.

Today, Mount Kilimanjaro is a special site. It brings crowds of climbers. It has many different places from rainforests to deserts. These make it rare for nature fans.

With Just African Safaris, we want you to see the mountain. Guides will show you how early tourists went up. You will feel the greatness of Kilimanjaro. Join us for this wonderful trip.

Formation of Mount Kilimanjaro

Mount Kilimanjaro is the highest mountain in Africa and it is an interesting place. It was formed over 3 million years ago because of volcanic activity. Three main volcanic cones came together to form this mountain.

Shira is the oldest cone, and it formed about 2.5 million years ago. After that, Mawenzi formed about 1 million years ago and Kibo is the youngest one that formed approximately 500,000 years ago. Its summit, Uhuru Peak, is 5,895 meters above sea level.

Many eruptions and lava flows helped shape Mount Kilimanjaro. There are craters, valleys, and plateaus on the mountain formed by volcanic activity. The mountain is made of volcanic rock. This means that the landscape changes from forests to deserts.

The diverse scenery of Kilimanjaro attracts adventurers and scientists because of its unique landscape that varies from forests to deserts due to the presence of different types of rocks created by volcanic activity.

Over time, big ice on top of Kibo mountain turned into ice. The ice got much smaller, caused by how the weather is changing. The rest of the ice helps people learn about the earth and save special places.

Hiking Mount Kilimanjaro Routes

Seven main Mount Kilimanjaro routes lead to the summit, Umuru Peak, but one for the Northern side and the rest five on the Southern side.

It takes five to nine days to summit and descend, so more days of trekking give more chances of success as the body gets used to being at high altitude. Our guide leads you along these many paths to the top and then down the mountain. The lines are:

Marangu Route

This is called the “Coca-Cola Route” with dormitory huts. Although ascending slowly causes more sickness.

Machame Route

Known as the “Whiskey Route” offers beautiful views but steeper paths with less gradual slopes to help beat the effects of altitude.

Lemosho Route

The pleasant western Lemosho Route, on the other hand, has fewer climbers and better acclimatization because of its more varied beauty over 8-9 days.

Rongai Route

Rongai is a quiet route from the north. It is less crowded and has a gentle grade. It offers great sights and is best suited for those looking for seclusion.

Shira Route

Like Lemosho, Shira starts from the west and quickly gains altitude. It passes through different ecosystems offering stunning views.

Umbwe Route

Umbwe is the shortest and the steepest route. It is the most challenging and recommended for experienced trekkers who are fit and well-prepared to ascend quickly.

Hiking Mount Kilimanjaro is a life-changing experience. Each route offers unique challenges and rewards. Join JustAfricanSafaris for a memorable journey to the summit.

Best Time Hiking Mount Kilimanjaro

Choosing the best time for hiking Mount Kilimanjaro is crucial for a successful adventure. At JustAfricanSafaris, we help you pick the ideal season for your climb. The climbing seasons are;

January to March

From January to March, the mountain experiences warm temperatures and clear skies. This period is less crowded, providing a peaceful hiking experience. However, occasional rains might occur, especially in the lower regions.

June to October

The June to October season is the most popular time for climbing. The weather is generally dry, offering excellent visibility and stable conditions. July and August are the busiest months, attracting climbers from around the world. Despite the crowds, the clear skies and mild temperatures make it an ideal time to hike.

November and December

Between November and December, the short rainy season begins. While it’s possible to climb, the trails can be slippery and challenging. The mountain’s beauty is still evident, but the weather can be unpredictable. Additionally, consider the lunar cycle when planning your climb. A full moon enhances visibility during night hikes, making the final ascent more enjoyable.

The long rainy season, from April to May, is the least favorable time to hike. Heavy rains make the trails muddy and difficult to navigate. Visibility is often reduced, and the risk of altitude sickness increases. We recommend avoiding this period for your Kilimanjaro adventure.

The Thrill of Wildlife on Mount Kilimanjaro Adventure

Experiencing the thrill of wildlife adventure adds a unique dimension to your climb. At JustAfricanSafaris, we ensure you encounter the mountain’s diverse fauna, making your journey even more memorable.

Firstly, the lower slopes of Kilimanjaro are rich in wildlife. As you begin your ascent, you traverse lush rainforests teeming with life. Monkeys, such as the blue monkey and the black-and-white colobus, are commonly seen swinging through the trees. Their playful antics provide a delightful start to your adventure.

Additionally, the rainforest zone is home to a variety of bird species. Keep an eye out for the iridescent sunbirds and the colorful turacos. Their vibrant plumage and melodic calls create a lively atmosphere as you hike.

As you climb higher, you enter the moorland and alpine desert zones. Here, you might spot smaller mammals like the four-striped grass mouse and the Kilimanjaro shrew. These hardy creatures have adapted to the harsh conditions, showcasing the resilience of nature.

Moreover, the mountain supports unique plant life that sustains its wildlife. Giant groundsels and lobelias provide shelter and food for many species. These plants, along with the ever-changing landscape, make every step an adventure.

Transitioning to the heath and moorland zones, you may encounter larger animals. Elephants and buffalo occasionally wander these areas, drawn by the sparse vegetation. While sightings are rare, the possibility adds an exciting edge to your climb.
